Abstract: Offseting is a fundamental task in Computer Aided Design which is currently not solved in an optimal way due to the fact that the offset of a rational curve or surface is no longer, in general, a rational curve and surface. It will be highlighted how the use of symbolic-numeric techniques, such as approximate implicitation, quantifier elimination, power series algorithms, etc, can be very useful to deal, in a very efficient way, with these geometric entities.
